Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation, based in Kawasaki, Japan, has announced its new expanded flash code memory microcontrollers.

These recent product line enhancements, consisting of sixteen new microcontroller products, are the latest addition to the company’s acclaimed TXZ+™ Family Advanced Class of low-power 32-bit microcontrollers for embedded applications. They are expressly designed to support the growing industry need for advanced microcontroller functionality for IoT-supported motor applications, which typically call for larger program capacity and firmware over-the-air support.

Each microcontroller has 512KB/1MB flash memory capacity and is available in four unique package types. Each has been integrated into the M4K Group of the TXZ+™ Family Advanced Class of 32-bit microcontrollers equipped with Cortex®-M4 core with FPU.

With these advances, the existing maximum microcontroller code flash memory capacity is expanded from 256 KB to 512 KB/1 MB, depending upon model. In addition, RAM capacity has expanded from 24 KB to 64 KB.  The company’s other popular existing microcontroller features, such as an Arm Cortex-M4 core running up to 160 MHz, integrated code flash, and 32 KB data flash memory with 100K program/erase cycle endurance, have been maintained. These new products incorporate 1MB code flash into two unique 512 KB areas, allowing firmware rotation utilizing the memory swap method. This method allows instructions to be read from the first area while updated code is programmed in parallel and within the second area.

Toshiba microcontrollers are also offered with various interfaces and enhanced motor control options, such as an advance-programmable motor driver (A-PMD), an advanced encoder 32-bit (A-ENC32), an advanced vector engine plus (A-VE+), and three high-speed, high-resolution 12-bit analog/digital converter units. As a result, M4K Group products can support an expanded number of IoT-related applications. They can also bring advanced functionality to AC motors, brushless DC motors, and inverter control applications.

All microcontroller devices in the Toshiba M4K Group feature UART, TSPI, and I2C integrated as general communications interfaces. Self-diagnosis functionality is incorporated in flash memory, RAM, ADC, and Clock devices to help customers meet IEC 60730 Class B functional safety certification requirements.

Beyond these announced enhancements to its M4K Group, Toshiba is also planning to increase the flash memory capacity of its M4M Group with CAN interface in the near future. Complete technical documentation, demo software with actual use case, and interface control driver software for each peripheral are available. Evaluation boards and development environments are also provided in cooperation with Arm global ecosystem partners.
