Amphenol RF, global industry experts in high-performance RF connectors, cable assemblies and adapters, has introduced new high-flex FAKRA cable assemblies designed for emerging automotive and transportation applications. The preconfigured assemblies use durable RG-58 cable to provide reliable mechanical and electrical performance in systems exposed to repeated movement, vibration and limited installation space. The assemblies are designed for dynamic cable routing where tight bend radii and repeated flexing can place significant mechanical stress on traditional coaxial cable. Applications include automotive communication systems, GNSS/GPS, telematics, infotainment and other RF-enabled vehicle technologies. They can also support industrial automation and robotics, test and measurement equipment, wireless communications infrastructure, RF prototyping and off-highway equipment.
Amphenol RF high-flex FAKRA cable assemblies support repeated movement and vibration in automotive communications, telematics and infotainment applications.
High-flex RG-58 cable supports millions of flexures and incorporates a fine-wire stranded copper center conductor with a tinned copper braid shield. This construction improves flexibility and durability while helping the cable maintain consistent electrical performance during movement. The 50-ohm assemblies operate from DC to 3 GHz and are engineered to preserve signal integrity when exposed to repeated flexing and vibration. This allows designers to route RF connections through areas where cables may be subject to continuous or recurring movement without sacrificing the electrical performance required by connected vehicle systems. The cables’ high-flex construction is combined with the secure, keyed interface of the FAKRA automotive connector system. FAKRA connectors use application-specific mechanical key codes and color-coded housings to help prevent mismating during vehicle assembly, maintenance and system integration. The ruggedized interface is designed for automotive environments involving vibration and temperature fluctuations.
Amphenol RF offers the assemblies in straight jack-to-plug, plug-to-plug and jack-to-jack configurations. These options allow engineering teams to select the appropriate connector combination for routing signals between antennas, electronic control units, communication modules and other RF-enabled vehicle equipment. Standard cable lengths include 12, 18, 24 and 36 inches, along with 1-, 2- and 3-meter options. This range supports different installation distances while reducing the need for customers to configure and terminate individual coaxial cables during system integration.
Published technical specifications include a minimum of 500 mating cycles, an operating temperature range of -40°C to 85°C and a maximum dielectric-withstanding voltage of 800 VRMS. Connector construction includes nickel-plated brass bodies and PTFE insulators. Amphenol RF notes that individual specifications may vary by part number and recommends consulting the applicable component drawing for final design requirements.
By combining a dynamically routable cable construction with an automotive FAKRA interface, the new assemblies provide an alternative to conventional coaxial cables that may experience greater mechanical stress in applications involving repeated cable movement. The design allows automotive and industrial equipment manufacturers to address flexibility, installation space, connection security and RF performance within a preconfigured assembly.
