Keysight Technologies has introduced a new dynamic testing solution that simplifies the evaluation of wide-bandgap (WBG) semiconductor bare chips. The innovative fixture enables device engineers to perform accurate, repeatable double-pulse testing of bare dies without the need for wire bonding, probe needles, or soldering—all while minimizing parasitic inductance.

WBG devices such as SiC and GaN are key enablers in high-efficiency power electronics used across sectors like electric vehicles, alternative energy systems, and data centers. Characterizing these devices at the bare chip level is critical for accelerating development cycles and validating performance before packaging. However, traditional test methods introduce parasitics and physical risks due to direct soldering and mechanical handling.
Keysight’s new bare chip dynamic measurement solution addresses these issues with a mechanically secured fixture that enables clean, consistent electrical contact with power-loop inductance under 10 nH. This setup supports high-speed switching operation and delivers accurate, noise-free measurement waveforms. The fixture is compatible with both the Keysight PD1500A and PD1550A Dynamic Power Device Analyzer/Double Pulse Testers.
“With the introduction of the new WBG semiconductor bare chip evaluation method, we are helping the industry expedite the development of highly efficient and robust power semiconductor discrete devices and power modules,” said Thomas Goetzl, Vice President and General Manager for Keysight Automotive & Energy Solutions. “Bare chip dynamic characterization, once regarded as almost impossible to do, is now possible with the extension to our power semiconductor test portfolio.”
The fixture allows engineers to characterize devices immediately after dicing, minimizing time to insight and improving R&D efficiency. The design also helps prevent chip damage or arcing during evaluation, making it suitable for repeated use across prototype iterations.
