lowRISC is a not-for-profit organization based in Cambridge, United Kingdom, dedicated to advancing open and secure silicon development. Founded in 2014 out of the University of Cambridge’s Computer Laboratory, lowRISC supports collaborative projects that aim to make open-source hardware practical, verifiable, and production-ready. The company provides long-term engineering stewardship, ecosystem coordination, and scalable infrastructure for major security-driven open hardware efforts.
lowRISC’s portfolio includes OpenTitan, the first open-source silicon root of trust project, and Sunburst, a framework designed to support secure SoC development with reusable and audit-friendly IP. Its Silicon Commons® model facilitates collaborative IP sharing among industry, academia, and the public sector to promote transparency and long-term sustainability in semiconductor design.
