NXP Semiconductors, experts in automotive radar and secure edge processing, has introduced its S32R47 family of third-generation imaging radar processors. Built on 16 nm FinFET technology, the new devices deliver up to twice the processing power of previous generations, with improved cost and energy efficiency for Level 2+ to Level 4 autonomous driving systems.

New imaging radar processors from NXP Semiconductors enable advanced ADAS functions through high-resolution sensing and precise environmental awareness.
The S32R47 family supports up to 200 virtual channels and integrates a high-performance multi-core radar processing system. When combined with NXP’s mmWave radar transceivers, power management ICs, and in-vehicle networking technologies, the platform meets ASIL B(D) functional safety standards and enables enhanced radar resolution, sensitivity, and dynamic range—crucial for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
According to Meindert van den Beld, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Radar & ADAS, “The S32R47 can efficiently process three times, or more, antenna channels in real time than today’s production solutions. It enables improved imaging radar resolution, sensitivity and dynamic range—required by demanding autonomous driving use cases—while still meeting the stringent power and system cost targets set by OEMs for volume production.”
The new processors enable richer point cloud generation and more accurate object classification in complex scenarios. This supports demanding use cases such as detection of vulnerable road users, lost cargo, and autonomous navigation in urban environments.
Built on the foundation of two previous generations of imaging radar, the S32R47 offers enhanced Direction of Arrival (DoA) processing and AI/ML capabilities to support high-resolution radar perception. Its design enables OEMs to reduce integration complexity and system cost by achieving comparable performance with significantly fewer antenna channels—up to 89% less than alternative solutions.
Already sampling to lead automotive customers, the S32R47 builds on a unified hardware-software architecture that supports corner radar, long-range radar, and 4D imaging systems. It features a high-performance hardware security engine, supports over-the-air updates, and aligns with emerging global automotive cybersecurity requirements.
